The Audition and Preparation

An audition takes about 10-15 minutes and can be done alone or with another singer. Parents may observe, if desired. Each prospective chorister should prepare a short song to sing without accompaniment. Examples: a song learned at school, a folk song, a hymn, something from a musical, “My Country ‘tis of Thee”, or “America the Beautiful”. Most pop or rock songs are not appropriate. Choose a song that is comfortable and shows off the voice to its fullest. Director Leora Schwitters will check for voice quality, range and listening skills with some fun echoing exercises, and have the singer sing 8 bars of a new song. She will be looking for the singer’s ability to focus and take direction, interest and ability to learn new things, and ability to match pitch. Singers wishing to join the more advanced groups will be asked to sight sing some simple melodies and rhythms, too.

Before or soon after your audition, please remember to give your teachers the recommendation forms to fill out and mail in, so that audition results are not delayed.

Overall, we are looking for the ability to sing in tune, focused behavior and maturity, commitment to the entire season’s obligations, and enthusiasm for learning.

Acceptance Notification:

Parents will be notified by email of acceptance and choir placement within a couple of days after an audition as soon as all items are received. If you do not receive notification within five work days after the audition, please call (253)347-0180.
